In 2000, education historian Ravitch wrote the influential Left Back: A Century of Battles over School Reform.
In her latest work The Death and Life of the Great American School System she explores how testing and choice are undermining education. 89.3FM KPCC’s Patt Morrison airs today from 1:00-3:00PM.

It’s a paradox. ‘Choice’ seems UNFAIR from the perspective of the right of every child to be treated the same. And, paradoxically, ‘choice’ is FAIR from the perspective of the right to be treated differently according to the circumstances of each, individual child.
If all parents were informed, involved and motivated ‘choice’ would not seem unfair or elitist. Choice would be seen as democratic.
Rather than stopping choice, we could ask how do we best close the fairness gap between motivated and unmotivated parents?
