Welcome families and friends of El Rio Charter School.
Our vision is to found a Kindergarten through 5th grade public charter school, opening in 2013, which brings the advantages of a Waldorf style education to Northeast Los Angeles.
We are calling for participants willing to strategize, collaborate and give skills and time to help us
make it happen.

Free Pass From (Teacher) Jail

I felt that this was an important article to share… I am hoping people with more LAUSD experience will comment!  I know that as a charter school you are not required to hire Union teachers – so how will this affect and/or influence El Rio Charter School and the quality of educators that will be a part of it?

We are at least somewhat immune to ineffective teachers because we will require our teachers to have a Waldorf teacher credential along with their regular teaching credential.

And that, alone, doesn’t address the pros and cons of the union issue. Anybody know anything about the union formed by Green Dot teachers?

I too am worried about the union issue. Educationally, it seems like a value that we would want students to see practiced by those who care about the needs of workers in this society. And humanly, I am concerned about the protection and well-being of all employees at the school. Unless the school is cooperatively owned by all stakeholders, it seems to me that a union might be an important strategy for getting these needs met. I’m wondering what the school planners think about this, and how they plan to ensure that employees’ needs are met.

As one of the planners, and an LA public school teacher and union member for the last 13 years, this issue is of great concern to me, as well. I do feel the need for some sort of union protection in our new school, but I’m not sure a contract as complex as the one UTLA has with LA Unified is necessary. I want to hear more about the union protections at the Green Dot schools, and I’m interested in looking into the California Teachers’ Association contract that Ocean Charter School (and other charters) use, for example. If you or anyone you know has any information on this issue of various ways of providing union protections, please contact us, for we are very much in an exploration phase and value your contributions in this area, and others. Thank you very much!
